A Passion for Botanical Medicine
Dr. McKnight’s fascination with medicinal plants began long before she entered medical school. She has always been captivated by the remarkable complexity of the natural world and the ability of botanicals to interact with the body’s physiology in sophisticated ways. Rather than viewing traditional medicine and modern science as separate disciplines, she sees them as complementary approaches that can strengthen one another.
This lifelong curiosity led Dr. McKnight to earn a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology before completing her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree at the prestigious National University of Health Sciences. Throughout her education, she pursued advanced training through fellowships, clinical mentorships, global health initiatives, and research, with a focus on botanical medicine, homeopathy, molecular biology, dermatology, and translational and regenerative sciences.
Discovering a Love for Research
While completing her doctoral training, Dr. McKnight developed a passion for laboratory research that would become one of the defining aspects of her career.
Working alongside leading researchers, she contributed to numerous studies investigating botanical medicine, antimicrobial compounds, antiviral research, natural products, and dermatologic science. She also independently designed and executed her own dermal fibroblast research model exploring extracellular matrix biology and the relationship between botanicals, collagen, elastin, and MMP/TIMP regulation.
Her innovative study design and meticulous laboratory execution earned formal recognition from the President of her college, who commended her for advancing the field of plant medicine and representing naturopathic medicine at an exceptionally high level.
Today, Dr. McKnight continues to be inspired by the process of asking scientific questions, designing thoughtful experiments, and translating laboratory discoveries into meaningful innovations for skincare and wellness.
